Current issue: 4/2010 – CONTENTS and HIGHLIGHTS
The issue will be available on July 28th 2010 (within Europe) – Overseas aprox. 10 days later .

Hi everyone,

Right now jet modellers from Switzerland to Norway and the USA are making the best possible use of the flying season, and JetPower reporters are in the thick of the action. In this issue you can read reports about meetings and contests from all over the world.

Of course, all of us are tempted now and again to cast an eye over the fence into the world of full-size aviation, and when we see an A380 coming in to land right by our front door in Baden-Baden, then we just have to report on the event. Staying with full-size aircraft, we come to the Schallflug T-33, which we look forward to greeting as a guest at the 2010 JetPower Fair to complement the L-39. Christian Effelsberg relates how an undertaking of this magnitude not only costs money but is also a great drain on patience.

Within quite a short time the BAe Hawk from CARF has turned into a great sales success, not least perhaps because it ushered in the trend towards slightly smaller models. Horst Westerholt has built one, and has written a detailed review on its construction and flying characteristics.

Extraordinary flying machines are bound to attract the attention of the modeller - and yet another example is the White Knight, which is intended to open the door to the world of space flight for tourists. And once again our finishing specialist “Ralle” Schneider has a surprise in store for us, as an adjunct to his ever-popular series. He shows just what can be done with his own Eurofighter.

As you would expect, this issue also includes articles of interest to the EDF enthusiast, with reviews of a Saab Draken and a Phantom. The technically-minded will enjoy reading Otto Wolfer’s contribution on the TelJET telemetry module from JetCat, as well as reviews of the BaseLog from PowerBox Systems and useful tools from Dremel.

This issue is the last one before what must be this year’s absolute highlight: the first German Championships for formation flying with model jets. Over the weekend of 6 to 8 August fourteen teams from five countries will battle it out for the hotly disputed places on the podium, not to mention the cash prizes from our sponsors. Keep this date free, and I hope very much that I will meet many of you at the MFM Marktgräflerland flying site at Müllheim in August.

Until then:

Happy landings

Yours

Winfried Ohlgart

F-4 Phantom II
The Blue Angel from Staufenbiel

The Phantom from Staufenbiel is an eye-catcher, and not just for its colour scheme: in contrast to many other EDF models this is no moulded foam job, but a GRP kit. If you install the recommended power system components, the result is a jet with an excellent performance without having to upgrade anything - although it does call for experienced hands on the sticks.

BAe Hawk
CARF’s sport jet

Nowadays many modellers consider themselves primarily model flyers rather than model builders, and many of them are looking for a sport jet which flies really well, meets a certain minimum standard of scale fidelity, but requires relatively little time in the workshop. CARF attempts to close this gap in the market with the BAe Hawk.

Joe Nall 2010
The world’s biggest model flying event

The Joe Nall Meeting in the USA is a superlative event: it is the world’s largest model flying meeting, hosting more than a thousand pilots operating from four runways, a lake, and a flightline which is literally kilometres long. A group of German model jet flyers made an impressive appearance at the event.

Finishing techniques for Rookies
Tampon printing and coloured waxes

In the previous issue of JetPower we discussed methods of applying small painted placards using etched templates. However, templates at these sizes can only be used if the typeface features tags, or bridges. What can we do if we want to apply small painted lettering without tags? Quite simple: we go a-stamping!

White Knight
An unusual scale project

The tandem combination of White Knight and SpaceShipOne was built by Burt Rutan’s company Scaled Composites, and has already completed the first successful commercial space flight. Tim Kleinschmidt decided to emulate this unusual project, and has started building models of the pair.

TOTAL MONITORING
The TelJET telemetry system

The TelJET telemetry system from ProJET enables the pilot to monitor essential airborne data in real time on a screen. The system also provides an option of speech output for three of ten transmitted parameters. Otto Wolfer has been peeping over the shoulder of “big brother”.
